A different approach to IT
Good technology. Good advice. No nonsense.
Technology should make running a business easier — not more expensive, more complicated or more frustrating. We're an independent IT company in Monmouth, helping businesses get more from their technology without spending more than they need to.

The person behind the badger
Hi, I'm Ryan.
I'm Ryan Russell, the founder of Monmouth IT. I've spent more than 16 years in technology — starting out as a software developer and working up to leading IT for businesses operating across dozens of locations.
Along the way I've built software, run networks, led major technology projects, worked across cyber security and cloud platforms, negotiated supplier contracts and helped businesses through periods of fast growth.
But I've never been interested in technology for its own sake. What interests me is what it can do for a business. Can we make something work better? Save money? Give people back some of their time? Fix the problem that's been frustrating everyone for years?
Those are the questions I enjoy answering, and they're why I started Monmouth IT: to give businesses the practical, commercially minded technology advice that usually only larger organisations get. Someone who can talk business strategy one minute and get stuck into a technical problem the next.
I've seen what good IT can achieve — and what bad IT can cost.
Most recently I've led technology for a fast-growing hospitality group, scaling its IT from 14 to 41 locations: integrating acquired businesses, bringing systems together, improving reliability, introducing automation and challenging how money was spent on technology. That work included a technology and supplier strategy projected to save more than £1 million over three years.
Before that I led technology in financial services, on systems supporting more than £500 million a year in transactions. And before IT leadership, I spent years developing bespoke software for large British manufacturers.
It all taught me the same thing: the biggest improvements don't always come from buying something new. Sometimes it's a licence nobody needs, a contract that can be renegotiated, or a task that takes someone two hours every Monday and could be automated. Sometimes it's just a fresh pair of eyes.
Experience
Experience that goes beyond the helpdesk.
in software, infrastructure and technology leadership
locations: a multi-site group's IT scaled in a single year
projected savings over three years from technology strategy and supplier consolidation
in annual transactions on systems under previous technology leadership
These figures reflect Ryan's career before founding Monmouth IT, not projects delivered by Monmouth IT.
How we work
Why Monmouth IT is different.
We won't sell you something just because we can.
If your existing systems do the job, we'll tell you. If there's a cheaper or simpler option, we'll find it.
IT is a business expense.
Every subscription, contract and new system has to justify its cost. We look at the commercial impact, not just the spec sheet.
We see the bigger picture.
A slow computer might be a simple fix — or a symptom of something bigger. We look at how your technology fits together.
We make AI practical.
AI that saves time and cuts admin, not something that looks impressive in a demo and never gets used.
We speak your language.
You shouldn't need an IT qualification to understand what you're paying for, or why we're recommending it.
Senior help when you need it.
Bigger decisions need a director's eye. Our drop-in IT director service gives you that a few days a month.
A local business that understands local businesses.
Monmouth isn't just where the business is based. It's home. I'm also a co-founder of Eat Me Drink Me, an independent café in the town, so I know what running a small business involves: the bills, the suppliers, the staffing, the surprises, and the constant balancing act between spending money and making things better.
When you're the one paying the invoices, technology decisions feel very different. It's one thing to recommend an expensive system from behind a desk; it's another to understand what that spend means to the owner. Alongside client work, I enjoy helping local organisations and community projects with technology advice and digital skills.
And the badger?
We wanted Monmouth IT to feel different from the usual corporate IT company — memorable, approachable and unmistakably local. The badger was a natural fit: quietly determined, resourceful and not one to make a fuss. We'd rather get on with fixing something than spend hours telling you how complicated it is.
(Also, they're brilliant. Look at that face.)
